Either one of the Atlanta Dream or the Golden State Valkyries will claim their first championship in history when the two meet up in the WNBA Finals starting on Saturday.
While Golden State has made it to the championship round in just their second season in existence, Atlanta last made the Finals in 2013 - 13 years ago. In fact, the Dream have played in three Finals (2010, 2011, 2013), but they have a combined 0-9 record after getting swept all three times. This year's WNBA Finals will be a best-of-seven series for the second season in a row, so the Dream will see more than three games in this one.
Angel Reese has spearheaded Atlanta to a 5-0 playoff record thus far, helping sweep both the Washington Mystics and New York Liberty. In her first playoff run, Reese has averaged 18 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 1.6 steals per game, while adding a willingness to shoot threes (38.5% on 2.6 attempts). Her defense, rebounding, and continuous growth on the offensive end has made her one of the league's best frontcourt players.
On Golden State's side, Gabby Williams has instilled a tough, defensive-minded culture in her first year with the Valks. After averaging under 10 points per game from 2018-2023, Williams has increased that number up to 14.4 while still maintaining that high level of defense. Between her, Veronica Burton, Kiah Stokes, and more, the Valkyries are very difficult to score consistently against. After winning 2-1 against the Dallas Wings in the first round, Golden State swept MVP A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals.
