The New York Liberty franchise was founded in October 1996, and started as the eighth original team in the inaugural 1997 WNBA season.
The New York Liberty play their home games at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The team is led by three-time WNBA Champion and MVP Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu who leads the franchise in three-pointers, and 2024 WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones.

In December 2025, Chris DeMarco was named the 10th head coach in franchise history. He previously worked as the assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Golden State Warriors.
