Las Vegas Aces WNBA Championship History

The Las Vegas Aces have won two WNBA Championships, and they came in back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023.

Vegas beat the Connecticut Sun in 2022 and the New York Liberty in 2023. Point guard Chelsea Gray won the Finals MVP Award in '22 and center A'ja Wilson, a three-time regular season MVP, won the Finals MVP in '23.

The Aces have made the playoffs in all but one of their seven seasons in Las Vegas, and they have never lost in the first round since their move from San Antonio.

The franchise made the WNBA Finals once when located in San Antonio. The Silver Stars played the Detroit Shock in 2008 and were swept in three games, but current Aces head coach Becky Hammon played the joint-most minutes of anyone in those Finals with 112.

Las Vegas Aces Coach

Becky Hammon, a Basketball Hall of Fame member and six-time WNBA All-Star, is the current head coach of the Las Vegas Aces.

Hammon started her playing career with the New York Liberty before she was traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars midway through her 16-year career. She finished in the top 10 in MVP voting in four of her eight seasons in San Antonio.

After retiring from her playing career in 2014, Hammon joined the NBA's San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach, where she learned from legendary coach Gregg Popovich. She has led the Aces to two titles since taking the head coaching job before the 2022 season.

Las Vegas Aces Ownership

Mark Davis, the son of longtime NFL team owner Al Davis, is the majority owner of the Las Vegas Aces along with his mother and Al Davis' widow, Carol.

The Davis family bought the team from the casino group that brought the franchise to Vegas. Mark Davis also serves as the chief executive of the NFL team his father owned, the Las Vegas Raiders.

Former NFL QB Tom Brady is a minority owner of the Aces.

Las Vegas Aces Iconic Players

Becky Hammon

There are few things better in sports than when a team's longtime star player returns to — successfully — coach the team, and that's exactly how Becky Hammon's career has gone.

Hammon never played in Las Vegas, but she played for the previous iteration of the franchise in San Antonio. She was named a WNBA All-Star in three of her eight seasons in Texas, and she averaged 15.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.1 steals in her time there.

A'ja Wilson

A'ja Wilson, a three-time WNBA MVP, one-time Finals MVP, six-time All-Star, and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, is not only the best player in Aces franchise history, but she may be the best WNBA player ever.

Wilson has improved her game each year of her professional career, and she's played the entirety of it with the Aces. She has averaged 21.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.9 block for her career while shooting 49.7 percent overall, 34.5 percent from three-point range, and 81.5 percent from the free-throw line.

The former South Carolina standout set a career-high and tied the WNBA record for most points in a game when she scored 53 against the Atlanta Dream on August 22, 2023. She reached that total despite attempting just one three-point shot in the game.

Las Vegas Aces Rivalries

The Las Vegas Aces' biggest rival is the New York Liberty, mainly because both teams have been at the WNBA's summit consistently for most of the past decade.

These teams will face off on Wednesday, August 13 as part of the WNBA's inaugural edition of Rivals Week.

The Liberty are led by a dominant forward of their own in Breanna Stewart, and her clashes against the Aces' A'ja Wilson have been must-watch TV over the years. Both organizations have plenty of depth, with Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones supporting Stewart in NY while Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young line up next to Wilson.

Plus, current Liberty coach Sandy Brondello led the Aces for one season in 2010, back when the team was called the San Antonio Silver Stars. She was fired after going 14-20 in her one season at the helm, and she had served as an assistant for the team from 2005 up until her promotion to head coach.

The Aces will also face the Connecticut Sun — who Vegas beat in the 2022 WNBA Finals — and the Phoenix Mercury during Rivals Week.
