Arizona Diamondbacks star right fielder Corbin Carroll was seen wincing in pain after hyperextending his right elbow while swinging the bat in Sunday's 8-7 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Carroll swung and missed at a pitch thrown by George Soriano in the seventh-inning and was clearly in pain as he walked back to the D-Backs dugout. Being a lefty thrower, the injury doesn't affect his arm and he stayed in the game on defense in the top of the eighth and ninth innings before Jorge Barrosa pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the ninth.
Good news is Arizona believes Carroll was not seriously injured and he has subsequently been ruled day-to-day.
"Just hyperextended that elbow and it lingered on me," Carroll said, per MLB.com. "I'd done it one a couple swings before the [All-Star] break, but they didn't linger. This one just lingered a little bit, but not concerned about it."
When Could Corbin Carroll Return?
Manager Torey Lovullo revealed that there is no imaging planned on the elbow, and Carroll said he might need a day off, but fans can expect to see the back-to-back All-Star on the field sooner rather than later.
Arizona hosts the Athletics in a three-game set with first pitch of the first game scheduled for 6:40 PT, but the lineups have yet to be announced.
The Diamondbacks (51-48) are half a game back of a three-way tie between the Cardinals (51-47), Miami Marlins (52-48), and Pittsburgh Pirates (52-48) for the third and final Wild-Card spot in the NL.
Carroll has been struggling recently but is still hitting .250/.344/.480 with 14 home runs and 10 stolen bases - a bat that the D-Backs need in their lineup.
