2026 World Cup Knockout Stage Format

The World Cup is a global celebration of culture and sport, but the knockout stage is a brutal win-or-go-home format.

Following the tournament's expansion from 32 to 48 teams, the 2026 World Cup will feature a Round of 32 for the first time.

Star players Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland have all qualified for the Round of 32 with their respective nations and will continue to race for the Golden Boot in 2026.

All three host nations—USA, Canada and Mexico—have also officially advanced past the group stage of the tournament.

How does the World Cup Knockout Stage Work?

The knockout rounds in the 2026 World Cup will have five different phases, including the Round of 32, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and eventually the Final.

The Round of 32 will be contested by the top two teams, and the top eight third-place teams from the group stage.

Every single match in the knockout rounds will be single elimination. If the match is tied at the end of 90 minutes, then the match will feature two 15 minute periods of extra time. If the game remains tied, then the winner will be decided by penalties.

In a penalty shootout, players take alternating penalty kicks against the opposing goalkeeper until an advantage is established in a best-of-five format. If the scores remain level after five kicks each, the shootout continues until a winner emerges.

What third-place teams make the knockout stage of the World Cup?

Traditionally, only the top two nations in each group advance to the knockout phase at FIFA World Cup tournaments. But the expanded 48-team, 12-group format will guarantee slots to the additional eight best teams that finished third in their respective groups.

To be eligible for one of the eight best third-placed spots, countries must finish third in their respective groups. All third-placed teams across all 12 groups will be ranked from highest to lowest by points won in their matches. The eight countries with the highest points among the 12 will advance to the Round of 32.

If countries are tied on points, tiebreakers will be used to determine which teams advance. The tiebreakers are listed as follows:

  1. Goal Difference
  2. Goals Scored
  3. Fair Play Status (Number of yellow and red cards accumulated in the Group stage)
  4. FIFA World Ranking (As of June 11)
