With Marcelo Bielsa at the helm, Uruguay will fancy their chances of topping Group H at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a group that contains 2024 European Championship winners Spain, both Saudi Arabia and Uruguay will know that they need to make a winning start at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Monday, as they bid to reach the knockout rounds of the competition.
For Saudi Arabia, this is their seventh appearance at the World Cup, only advancing from the group on one occasion although that success did come on American soil in 1994.
For Uruguay, they’re just one of six nations to win the World Cup on several occasions, famously lifting the trophy in 1930 and 1950.
Although they boast a strong attacking line up, Uruguay have hardly been in freescoring form of late, netting just two goals in total across their last four international outings.
A 0-0 draw with Algeria serves as their most recent fixture back in late March, a match during which they recorded just one shot on target in total during what was considered by supporters as a disappointing performance.
As such, a cagey affair should be expected here and a tight first half with few opportunities wouldn’t surprise, especially considering that the two-time world champions have struck just one first-half goal across their last seven internationals.
They should be able to overcome Saudi Arabia in the long run here however, as the Green Falcons head into this tournament after installing new manager Georgios Donis less than two months before this opener.
They’ve also won just one of their five internationals so far in 2026, and with their only victory in that time coming against opposition ranked outside the top 150 according to FIFA in the form of Puerto Rico, they could really struggle to make an impact here against strong opposition.
Now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia for Al-Hilal, Uruguay striker Darwin Núñez struck six goals across his 16 league games this season for his side, and with the majority of the Green Falcons’ backline playing in their main domestic league, he could be amongst the goals again here.
On top of that, the former Liverpool star enjoyed a stand-out World Cup qualification campaign with his nation, bagging five goals in total.
Three of those came against top opposition in the form of Argentina, Brazil and Colombia while his two goals at the 2024 Copa America show his pedigree for finding the back of the net in major tournaments.
Heading into this opening matchday showdown, neither Saudi Arabia or Uruguay find themselves in strong goalscoring form of late.
Only once across their last eight internationals have Saudi Arabia netted more than one goal in 90 minutes, and even though their defence remains leaky, Uruguay themselves haven’t been hitting the back of the net with any regularity recently either.
They head into this tournament having struck just five goals in total across their last seven matches on the international stage, with their latest performance during a goalless draw with Algeria coming under heavy criticism due to its lack of attacking play.
Historically, Uruguay’s recent matches at the World Cup have largely been lowscoring affairs too, with just one of their last 10 witnessing both sides score. Only two of those also saw three or more total goals netted as well.
