Previous World Cup Summary (2022)

Uruguay suffered an early exit in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, exiting the tournament after the group stage - their earliest exit in a World Cup since 2002.

Uruguay World Cup History

Uruguay has been regarded as the first powerhouse soccer team in the sport's history after it won the first ever World Cup in 1930, knocking off Argentina 4-2. La Celeste also took home the championship in the 1950 World Cup where they upset the hosts, Brazil, 2-1.

Uruguay Copa America History

Uruguay has a legendary status in Copa America competitions, claiming 15 championships, most recently in 2011. They have made 46 appearances in Copa America tournaments and have hosted it seven times.

Uruguay competed in the 2024 Copa America, where it went undefeated in the group stage (including a 1-0 victory over the United States) and eventually finished in third place after falling to Columbia 1-0.

Uruguay Soccer Olympics History

Before the creation of the World Cup, Uruguay won two gold medals in Olympic Soccer in 1924 and 1928 - the highest level soccer tournament before the World Cup.

Those are the only two medals in Uruguay's history, but that first title was a landmark accomplishment that proved that South American teams could compete, and beat, the terrific European teams.

Former Argentina national team manager Marcelo Bielsa was hired to lead Uruguay in 2023. He became only the second non-Uruguayan to be appointed as manager Uruguay's national team.
