Hernandez had 10 amateur fights on the West Coast between 2011 and 2013 before turning professional.
Debuting as a pro in 2014, Hernandez made a name for himself on the regional scene where he captured the vacant LFA title in 2018.
That five-round unanimous decision victory over Brendan Allen was an important milestone for Hernandez, showing his pressure grappling worked over 25 minutes against an opponent who has also since gone on to have success in the UFC.
Later in 2018, Hernandez was offered the opportunity to fight on Dana White's Contender Series.
A knockout victory over Peter Wright 40 seconds into the first round won him a UFC contract.
However, there was controversy after the fight as the bout was overturned to a no-contest due to Hernandez posting a post-fight drugs irregularity.
Although it did not affect his contract, Hernandez found life tough early on in the UFC, losing two of his first three fights, being submitted by Markus Perez on debut and TKO'd by Kevin Holland.
After the Holland defeat, Hernandez submitted Rodolfo Vieira in a Performance of the Night display in early 2021.
This was the turning point for Hernandez, who began to showcase the grit and grappling pressure that would start to define his UFC run.
Signature wins in his last four fights have emboldened the American's status as a real problem in the middleweight division.
2024 victories over Roman Kopylov by submission win and Michel Pereira by TKO were impressive step-ups, while 2025 saw defining wins, firstly in a rematch with Brendan Allen, which was backed up by a main-event submission over Roman Dolidze.
Now ranked number four in the division, a win over former champion Sean Strickland could well secure Hernandez a shot at current belt holder Khamzat Chimaev.
Hernandez boasts a 17-3 pro record in MMA, with his UFC run standing at 15-3.
The American has not been beaten in five years and nine months and is riding an eight-fight winning streak.
The 32-year-old has won seven of his nine UFC contests by finish, with five wins by submission and two by knockout.
Known for his constant forward pressure, grit and grappling control, Hernandez has proven to be a difficult puzzle to solve for many of the division's elite fighters.
It's estimated that the Highlight has a net worth of $1m.
Hernandez took on Sean Strickland at UFC Fight Night: Strickland vs Hernandez on February 21, 2026 at the Toyota Center in Houston.
His next fight is yet to be announced.
