Legendary tennis player Serena Williams is back for the first time playing singles for the first time since 2022, and will face Australian Maya Joint in the first round of the 2026 Wimbledon Championship.

Williams, 44, recently returned to play doubles at the Queen's Club HSBC Championships and the Berlin Tennis Open - both on grass - in preparation for Wimbledon. She went 1-1 at Queen's Club with Victoria Mboko, but fell in the first match of the Berlin Open with partner Karolina Muchova.

The GOAT of women's tennis will now play both singles and doubles at Wimbledon after she had already accepted a wild-card invite for doubles alongside her older sister Venus Williams.

Williams is a seven time Wimbledon champion (2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016), and last played at Wimbledon in 2022 before retiring a few months later. The legend reached four consecutive Wimbledon finals between 2015 and 2019, but bowed out in the Round of 128 in her most recent appearances in 2021 and 2022.

N0. 39 ranked Maya Joint will have the privilege of facing Williams in the first round. The 20-year-old has already won one WTA title, and has a 11-8 record so far in 2026. Joint will be playing at Wimbledon for just the second time in her young career.

Williams had already won two Wimbledon Championships and a total of by the time Joint celebrated her first birthday.
