Legendary tennis player Serena Williams has accepted a wild-card invitation to play singles at Wimbledon - it will be her first pro singles match since 2022.
Williams, 44, recently returned to play doubles at the Queen's Club HSBC Championships and the Berlin Tennis Open - both on grass - in preparation for Wimbledon. She went 1-1 at Queen's Club with Victoria Mboko, but fell in the first match of the Berlin Open with partner Karolina Muchova.
The G.O.A.T of women's tennis will now play both singles and doubles at Wimbledon after she had already accepted a wild-card invite for doubles alongside her older sister Venus Williams.
While Williams has had some experience playing doubles lately, she has not played a singles match since losing to Alja Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open nearly four years ago.
She was still weighing her desire to play lonesome as recently as last week, but when she found out there was still a wild-card spot open at Wimbledon, she decided to accept the challenge.
"Do you think I'm ready for singles?" Williams asked a reporter when she was mulling her decision after losing in Berlin last week, per ESPN. "That's the question of the hour, right? I don't know...I don't know," she continued.
It appears that she is, indeed, ready.
Williams has won seven of her 23 Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon, 2016 being the most recent one when she defeated Angelique Kerber in straight sets.
The singles draw happens on Friday, where she'll find out who her first-round matchup will be against. Due to her wild-card status, there's a decent chance that she matches up against a top player in the world to welcome her back to professional singles tennis.
