Iga Swiatek is looking to defend her 2025 Wimbledon title and become the first woman to win the iconic tournament in back-to-back years since Serena Williams did it in 2015 and 2016.
Her path to history will start against Taylor Townsend, an American that is widely known for her doubles dominance, but is ranked No. 81 in singles.
Townsend is a master in doubles play - she's currently the World No. 2 and has won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and has finished as the runner-up in two US Opens.
On the singles side, however, her highest ranking ever was No. 46 in 2024. The 30-year-old is 14-8 in singles play in 2026 with her best finish coming at the ATX Austin Open where she was ever-so-close to claiming her first career singles title - instead finishing the runner-up to fellow American Peyton Stearns.
Swiatek, on the other hand, has been one of the best singles players on the tour ever since the turn of the decade. She's currently ranked No. 3 in the world and has topped the WTA rankings plenty of times in her career.
She has 25 singles titles in her career, though she hasn't won one yet in 2026. In the first two slams of the year, the Polish player lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open to Elena Rybakina and fell to Marta Kostyuk in the Round of 16 at Roland Garros.
Swiatek has been known as the "Queen of Clay" for a while now after she won four of five French Opens between 2020 and 2024, but her Wimbledon crown in 2025 proved that she can also dominate on grass. Townsend has an extreme challenge looming in the first round.
Despite both players being on the WTA tour for a long period of time, the two have never faced each other head-to-head.
