The San Antonio Spurs are just one game away from reaching their first Conference finals since 2017, as they head to Minneapolis on Friday night.
A crushing 126-97 win at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday has put the Spurs in prime position to close out the Minnesota Timberwolves in this NBA Playoff series.
Victor Wembanyama continues to shine for the Spurs and another big night from the Frenchman will see him take a giant leap towards his first NBA title.
The Timberwolves have not led the series since their opening-game victory earlier this month and their heavy defeat this week suggests they are running out of gas.
Slow starts have been a problem for Minnesota for some time and they have cost them again across this series.
Chris Finch’s men scored just 17 points in the second quarter of Game 5, leaving them down by 12 at the half-time break.
The Spurs took full advantage, with Wembanyama firing 18 points alone in the first quarter, and a repeat will see the Timberwolves blown away.
Anthony Edwards top scored for Minnesota with just 20 points, with Rudy Gobert dropping just four points in his 23 minutes on court.
The Timberwolves are clearly too reliant on Edwards, who was the only player to score 16+ points in Monday’s Game 4.
Wembanyama stole the show in the Spurs previous win at Target Center in Game 3, scoring 39 points and claiming 15 rebounds.
Although the main focus has been on Edwards and Wemby, others have stepped up to make an impact during the series, including Stephon Castle.
The 21-year-old chipped in with 17 points, four rebounds and six assists on Wednesday and was 8-11 from field goal attempts.
Castle also chipped in with 20 points and six rebounds in Game 4 and has so far, averaged 18.7 points per game during the playoffs.
The Spurs guard has a field goal post-season average of 46% and has scored better on the road than he has in San Antonio - 20.5 compared to 17.5 per game.
Game 5 was the second time in the series that the Timberwolves failed to reach three figures and tiredness looks to be having an impact.
Finch’s roster needed six games to see off the Denver Nuggets in the last round and the reliance on Edwards will be a real worry for fans and backers, as they head into game 94 of the season.
The Timberwolves have reached the 106.5 total just twice in the opening five games of the series, having averaged 118.0 during the regular season.
