The New York Knicks will have a chance to win the title when they visit the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night.
Against all odds, New York has a 3-1 lead instead of being tied 2-2 heading back to San Antonio. The Knicks came back from a 29-point deficit – including 20 points in the fourth quarter – to stun the Spurs 107-106 at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.
With tipoff set for 8:30 pm ET on ABC, it’s time to break down Saturday’s matchup and discuss the best bets to make.
San Antonio may be at home for Game 5, but all of the momentum is with New York – and that’s an understatement. The Knicks outscored the Spurs 58-30 in the second half on Wednesday, including 32-16 in the fourth quarter. It was the biggest comeback – and without question the most unbelievable collapse – in NBA Finals history.
Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby could not be playing with more confidence for New York. At the other end of the spectrum, it will be hard for San Antonio point guard De’Aaron Fox to bounce back from his second-half blunders on Wednesday.
There is a very realistic chance that the Spurs are cooked after what transpired in Game 4. Even if they aren’t, asking them to win by at least six points seems like an overly ambitious proposition.
Game 3 was a relatively high-scoring affair with 226 total points scored, but for the most part defense has led the way in this series.
It began with a pair of low-scoring contests in San Antonio. The Knicks took both, winning 105-95 in the opener and 105-104 in Game 2. They have given up more than 108 points only twice in their entire playoff run and have held opponents to fewer than 100 points on five occasions.
The Spurs have limited opponents to 107 points or fewer in six of their last eight games dating back to the Western Conference Finals against Oklahoma City.
San Antonio’s defense imploded late in Game 4, but the home team knows that it is capable of putting the clamps down in crunch time. Don’t forget that New York scored a mere 20 points in the fourth quarter of Game 3.
Brunson caught fire in the fourth quarter of Game 4, finishing with 36 points. The star point guard also ramped up his aggressiveness and attempted 11 free-throws – his second-highest mark of these playoffs. Brunson has now scored at least 30 points in three of four games in the finals and in seven of 12 playoff appearances.
If Brunson – and his team as a whole – can get off to even a mediocre start on Saturday, he should eventually soar over this number. The star point guard has endured several rough first halves and is still regularly reaching the 30-point mark.

Although it’s almost all good news for the Knicks these days, getting Mikal Bridges back on track would be a bonus. The Villanova product has been held to single-digits three times in this series, including two points in Game 3 and seven on Wednesday.
Fox has committed 13 turnovers through four games after turning the ball over just three times in his last four games against Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals. Don’t be surprised if a red-hot Dylan Harper sees more playing time at point guard.
