The Miracle at the Garden: Knicks Complete Historic 29-Point NBA Finals Comeback

Madison Square Garden was silenced up until the third quarter, when the Knicks slowly began their comeback.

The Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama, dominated the first half, opening up a 27-point halftime lead and extending it to 29 in the third quarter. For much of the night, it appeared the series would be heading back to the Alamo tied up at 2-2.

San Antonio looked like Golden State out there, making a historic 14-of-26 from beyond the arc. Nobody on the team looked like they could miss.

But the Knicks, a team defined by resilience all season, never gave up. The comeback began slowly in the third quarter from a 76-49 halftime deficit.

Ultimately, New York’s defense tightened and the Spurs, expectedly, continued to launch threes. The Knicks outscored San Antonio 58-30 in the second half after slowly chipping away at the lead until the atmosphere in the arena shifted from despair to utter shock.

Biggest Shot in MSG History

With the Knicks trailing 106-105, Jalen Brunson, who finished with a game-high 36 points—launched a long three-pointer over Wemby.

As the ball bounced off the front of the rim, OG Anunoby ran to the basket and soared ahead of Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell to tip the ball in with just 1.2 seconds remaining. This insane tip-in sent the Garden into a frenzy. Jerry Seinfeld's face was a visual representation of how everyone was reacting to what just happened.

But the game wasn't over just yet. The Spurs had one more chance to tie the series up.

Unfortunately, Stephon Castle couldn't hold on to the ball off the inbound pass as the clock expired and the entire building erupted in celebration.

This was the largest comeback in NBA Finals history ahead of the 24-point comeback set by the Boston Celtics in 2008. It is a performance that will be studied for generations and is a testament to the grit of this New York Knicks team and a reminder to never let your foot off the gas in ANY game.

With this win, the Knicks take a commanding 3-1 series lead, moving to the brink of their first NBA championship since 1973. While the Spurs will look to regroup for Game 5 in San Antonio, the narrative of this series has been altered.
