As NBA free agency gets closer and closer, a league-wide bombshell has been dropped.
Through his agent Rich Paul, 41-year-old LeBron James announced he will not return to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2026. The NBA's all-time leading scorer spent the past eight seasons in LA, winning the 2020 NBA Championship and making an All-NBA team in seven of those years.
LeBron's contract expired at the end of last season so he's unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team in the league once the window opens at 6:00 PM ET today.
Despite his age, James is still an extremely effective player and will have plenty of suitors making their pitch to sign the 4x MVP. His size, terrific playmaking, slashing ability, transition play, and off-ball cutting make him valuable for plenty of contenders.
Last year, the King averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game, shooting 51.5% from the field and helping the Lakers finish with a 53-29 record.
When Los Angeles pulled off the miraculous trade for Luka Doncic, it felt like they acquired LeBron's running mate until he retired, but a disappointing loss to Minnesota in the first round in 2025 and Doncic's injury leading to a sweep against OKC showed that the two injury-prone ball-handlers might not be the best fit for each other.
Before breaking down his fits with his potential suitors, let's take a look at the odds for his next team below, provided by bet365:

Initial reports have the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat as the top suitors for LeBron. Golden State is going for one last hoorah as Steph Curry nears 40-years-old, and they are heavily interested in giving James their $15 million mid-level exception to pair the two legends.
The Warriors have also been rumored to trade Jimmy Butler and more for LeBron's former teammate Anthony Davis, but reports have stated that their pursuits for James and Davis are not related - and the trade talks seemed to have died down recently. A potential lineup of Curry, James, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford carries a large injury risk, but it will be fascinating to watch to say the least.
On paper, the starting lineup would have a nice balance of shooting, playmaking, defense, and length, but it's hard to trust that the team will be fully healthy once the playoffs come around after a long regular season.
If LeBron has a championship in mind as the leading part of his decision to leave the Lakers - rather than wanting to stay in California and play with Curry - a second reunion in Cleveland makes the most sense.
Cleveland was just in the Eastern Conference Finals, and LeBron would fill in extremely nicely in between guards James Harden and Donovan Mitchell and big-men Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. James would help them become longer defensively on the perimeter and make up the lack of reliable offense from Mobley and Allen.
The third-favorite to land LeBron is also one of his former teams - the Miami Heat. After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat might want to go all-in and sign the King. The fit would be interesting around Giannis - LeBron isn't known for nailing threes, and addressing shooting seems like the most pertinent need for the Giannis-led team.
However, James would give them a ball-handler - another one of their big needs - and he could take some playmaking pressure off Antetokounmpo, letting him feast off-ball.
Wherever he signs, he'll immediately help his next organization. Whether it's strictly on-court play, or even in the locker room helping develop young players, he's still valuable at this point of his career.
With free agency opening this evening, it would be no surprise to see LeBron sign with a team before July starts.
