When the NBA season started in October, fans would've scoffed at the thought of a New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs finals being possible. Eight months later, the 1999 finals rematch has come to fruition.
The Knicks ran back effectively the same team that lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals last year and hired Mike Brown at head coach - who was fired from the Sacramento Kings less than halfway through the year in 2024/25.
The Spurs always had potential, but they were young and unproven. Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Julian Champagnie, Devin Vassell and rookie Dylan Harper have all improved, or been a boost, in massive ways.
Now, sitting here in June, there's no doubt that these two teams were the best in their respective conference. The Knicks decimated the East en route to the Finals in one of the most dominating playoff runs of all-time - they've won 11 games in a row.
San Antonio went 4-1 against OKC in the regular season and proved that wasn't a fluke with a series win in seven epic games.
It's a battle of two teams with extreme depth - the key formula for winning a championship in this era. "Super teams" have transitioned from the "Big 3" era of the 2010s to now the teams that have the best eight-to-ten man rotations.
However, the series, and the Finals MVP trophy, may come down to the superstar on each respective team. 6'1" Jalen Brunson will look to lead his Knicks to their first championship since 1973 against the 7'4" Wembanyama.
Ahead of Game 1 on Wednesday, June 3, lets take a look at the odds to bring home the FMVP trophy below:
