Argentina face Switzerland in the Quarterfinals of the World Cup on Saturday, July 11th in Kansas City.

Argentina walked an easy path through the Group Stage of the 2026 World Cup, but have faced major scares against inferior opponents in the knockout stages.

The reigning champions drew 1-1 with Cape Verde in the first 90 minutes of their Round of 32 fixture, squeezing out a narrow 3-2 victory in extra time, before requiring a massive comeback to defeat Egypt in the Round of 16.

Lionel Messi's team trailed Egypt 2-0 with 11 minutes remaining, yet managed to turn the result around to win 3-2 within normal time. Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernández scored the three goals in the final minutes to see Argentina advance to the quarterfinals.

Argentina will now face a Switzerland side that finds itself in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, when they hosted the tournament. Switzerland easily defeated Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32, but were unable to score against Colombia in the Round of 16, requiring composed penalty takers to defeat the South American side in a shootout after the match finished goalless following 120 minutes.

Central defenders Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi were phenomenal against Colombia and will need to replicate that performance against Messi and the clinical Argentine attackers.

The winner of the match will advance to face the winner of Norway and England in the Semifinals of the 2026 World Cup.
