Update on Alphonso Davies' Hamstring injury, and his status for the World Cup.
Alphonso Davies is Canada's clear top talent heading into the 2026 World Cup, but is at risk of missing multiple games due to injury.
Regarded as one of the best left backs in the world, Davies has struggled with injury problems throughout his career, and this hamstring injury is just the latest setback in the 25-year-old's career.
Davies injured his left hamstring in Bayern Munich's second UEFA Champions League semifinal match against PSG on May 6, and was initially ruled out for just a couple of weeks. Davies has not played since the semifinal, missing Bayern's German Cup final match against Stuttgart, and Canada's recent international friendlies.
As the captain of the Canada Men's National Team, Davies is a key player in the teams success. Without him on the field, Canada will have much more difficult time competing in Group B with Switzerland, Qatar, and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Canada's head coach, Jesse Marsch, told the Canadian news outlet CBC, that Davies will eventually play in the 2026 World Cup in which Canada are co-hosts. However, Marsch also confirmed that Davies will miss Canada's first match against Bosnia on June 12.
Canada will be without their pacey winger against Bosnia & Herzegovina, but the player and his nation are hopeful that he can return to play in the second match of the group stage against Qatar on June 18.
Davies may have a limited role against a weak Qatar side, in order to save his strength for Canada's final and toughest match of the group stage against Switzerland on June 24.
Marsch also said that they will take Davies' injury step-by-step, but that he will be ready to play before the end of the group stage.
