Mexico, Canada, and the United States will host the largest World Cup in the history of the tournament, with 48 nations aiming for global soccer supremacy.
The FIFA World Cup traditionally contained 32 teams, but 2026 will see a significantly expanded version, allowing many teams qualify for the tournament for the very first time.
Curacao are one of the teams to qualify for the first time, and become the smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup. The expanded tournament helped the Curacao qualify for the tournament, but five of the six largest countries in the world by population (India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Nigeria) failed to qualify.
Teams qualify through their regional confederations, and each confederation uses their own qualifying tournament format. FIFA determines the number of teams that qualify from each confederation.
Here's the breakdown:
Concacaf: Six direct spots + two Play-Off Tournament places
CONMEBOL: Six direct spots + one Play-Off Tournament place
UEFA: 16 direct spots
CAF: Nine direct spots + one Play-Off Tournament place
AFC: Eight direct spots + one Play-Off Tournament place
OFC: One direct spot + one Play-Off Tournament place
The DR Congo, Iraq, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sweden, Turkiye, and Czechia were the final six teams to clinch their place at the 2026 World Cup through the Intercontinental and UEFA Play-offs.
The biggest surprise was that Italy failed to qualify the World Cup for the third year in a row, becoming the first team to win four World Cups and also miss three consecutive tournaments.
