Sheffield United & Bolton Wanderers join Portsmouth in race for League One striker

Plymouth Argyle will face a fight to retain the services of Aribim Pepple as interest in the striker ramps up in the summer transfer window.

Championship

Portsmouth News reported that the 23-year-old -- who has been subject to interest from Pompey in recent weeks -- is being eyed by Championship duo "Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United", while Danish outfit AGF Aarhus are also keen on the player.

It's yet to be seen as to how concrete Portsmouth's interest in Pepple is, but competition from other Championship suitors may force their hand as John Mousinho seeks attacking reinforcement after an 18th-placed finish in the 2025/26 campaign.

Portsmouth are closing in on the signing of Almeria striker Marko Milovanovic for a reported €6m, but they retain an interest in Pepple and so the race for Pilgrims man is expected to accelerate.

Pepple moved to Canada with his family at five and it was there where his senior career got off the ground, signing his first professional contract with Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC in 2019.

After returning to Cavalry following a short spell with Getafe's youth setup, it wasn't long before the striker was subject to interest from the EFL. Then Championship outfit Luton Town secured his signature in August of 2022, but he was never given a chance at Kenilworth Road and instead spent the best part of three years on loan with various sides.

Pepple enjoyed his most productive season in 2024/25 -- where his time was split across loan stints with National League side Southend United and League Two outfit Chesterfield -- and Plymouth paid a reported £250k fee to secure his services in July 2025.

While the signing of Pepple was viewed by some as a gamble given that he had never played higher than the fourth tier of English football, the striker repaid Plymouth's faith with 16 League One goals in his debut campaign.

You'd suspect that the Devon outfit would want seven figures to sanction Pepple's sale just a year on from buying him for a quarter of a million pounds, and they may even benefit from a potential bidding war driving the striker's price up.
