How much are medals worth at the Winter Olympics?

Winning an Olympic medal for your country represents the highest achievement in the career of most athletes, with the monetary value of the medal incomparable to its sentimental value.

Nevertheless, there is a monetary value attached to medals. Crafted by the Italian State Mint for the 2026 Winter Olympics, the medals actually weigh slightly different amounts and each have their own unique composition.

Silver medals weigh 500 grams and are made of .999 silver, while bronze medals are made of copper and weigh 420 grams. Interestingly, gold medals are also predominantly made up of silver. A gold medal at the Winter Olympics is made up of the same 500 grams of .999 fine silver, but with an extra six grams of .9999 fine gold.

The price of these metals varies wildly however, and their actual monetary value fluctuates from day to day. In the UK, fine silver is around £56-£64 per troy ounce, though figures on 4th February priced the metal at around £65, making the value of a silver medal around £900 and £1044.

Gold comes in at around £3700 per troy ounce, meaning roughly £703 worth of gold goes into a Winter Olympic gold medal.

With copper being a much cheaper metal, they're estimated to be worth around £4 each.
