Although we complain incessantly about the cold weather in Great Britain, British athletes haven't fared too badly on snow and ice since the inaugural Winter Olympic Games in 1924.
British Olympians and Paralympians have earned more than 70 medals over the past century. However, securing a gold medal at the Winter Games has been a rarer feat, achieved on only 13 occasions for Team GB.
Matt Weston is the latest to add his name to the illustrious roll of honour after he claimed gold in the men's skeleton at the 2026 Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, setting track records in all four heats to triumph in emphatic fashion.
Weston accompanies Amy Williams and Lizzy Yarnold in achieving gold in skeleton. Yarnold is Britain's most decorated Winter Olympian after finishing top of the pile in the women's event at Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018.
Skeleton now equals figure skating as Great Britain's most successful event in the Winter Olympics with four golds each. In figure skating, Jeannette Altwegg was victorious in the women's singles in Oslo in 1952, and Team GB won figure skating gold in three successive Games from 1976 courtesy of John Curry, Robin Cousins and the famous duo of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
Three of Britain's gold medals in the Winter Games have been achieved in curling. The men's team consisting of William Jackson, Thomas Murray, Robin Welsh and Laurence Jackson were triumphant at the first Winter Olympics in 1924, and we would have to wait 78 years for the next gold in curling as Rhona Martin, Debbie Knox, Fiona MacDonald, Janice Rankin and Margaret Morton reigned supreme at Salt Lake City in 2002.
In 2022, the women's team of Eve Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jennifer Dodds, Hailey Duff and Mili Smith defeated Japan 10-3 in the final in Beijing.
Britain's other two gold medals were claimed in ice hockey and bobsleigh, the latter seeing Robin Dixon and Tony Nash finish top of the timesheets at Innsbruck 1964.
