With five straight wins, the Indiana Fever continue to move up the standings and they travel to Dallas to take on the slumping Wings at 8pm ET on Thursday night.
Dallas has lost two straight and 8 of 11, dropping from 17-8 to 20-16 and eighth place in the WNBA standings. The Wings hold the last playoff spot, but Portland is now only 4.5 games behind.
Paige Bueckers had 21 points, but turned the ball over 7 times in the Wings’ 78-70 setback at Golden State on Monday. Arike Ogunbowale had 17 points, and Alanna Smith added 13 points and five rebounds.
Jessica Shepard, who had missed all but five minutes of the previous three games, returned to tally four points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes.
Indiana, meanwhile, has won 10 of 12 to move to 24-12 overall, a half-game ahead of defending champion Las Vegas for third place. The Fever have won three straight and seven of eight on the road, including a 101-95 victory over Toronto on Tuesday. Kelsey Mitchell had 29 points, and Caitlin Clark added 24 points and seven assists.
Aliyah Boston contributed 16 points and six rebounds, Makayla Timpson chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds, and Sophie Cunningham added 13 points off the bench as the Fever shot 53% from the field and 44% (11-for-25) from 3-point range.
These teams have split their first two meetings of the season. Dallas won a 107-104 thriller at Indiana to open the season, but the Fever defended home court and returned the favor last week, 98-87.
The Fever are 2.5-point road favorites with a -150 moneyline. Indiana did not cover its 10.5-point spread as a favorite at Toronto on Tuesday. Dallas sits at +125. The Wings covered as 6.5-point underdogs in the season opener against Indiana, who covered as a 7.5-point favorite at home against Dallas last week.
The Fever are on a season-high five-game road trip, but they are 11-6 away from home this season. Mitchell just set the WNBA record with her 20th straight game of 20 points or more. She and Clark now hold the league with 16 games in which both scored 20 or more points.
Those two, along with Boston, are as consistent as it gets in this league. Clark had seven turnovers against the Tempo, but the Fever will gladly trade the giveaways for the explosive ball movement. And every game, at least 1-to-2 other Fever players get in on the action. Tuesday, it was Timpson and Cunningham. Against the Wings last week, it was Tyasha Harris with 15 points.
Dallas is still 10-6 at home, but the Wings look and feel deflated. No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd, who has missed the last five games, is now out for the season as she is going to have arthroscopic surgery on her right knee.
Valuable reserve Aziaha James is still out with a leg injury. Shepard is back, but will she be able to get closer to her 13.9-point and 11.2-rebound-per-game averages against Boston in the middle?
Tonight’s matchup should play out pretty much as it did last week, when Clark had 29 points and 10 assists, Mitchell scored 23 points, and Boston had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Clark only turned the ball over once. When she posts anywhere near a 10-1 split between assists and turnovers, forget about it.
Bueckers had 29 points, six rebounds, and six assists last week, but it was not enough. Dallas is on a 0-6 streak against the spread. Look for that to continue as the Fever win and cover the 2.5-point spread as favorites.
These teams fell just short of the 185.5-point total last week. Dallas has played to the Under in three straight games, Indiana has played to the Under in two of three, and these teams have played to the Under in three of their last four meetings.
But we’re going with the Over on this high-flying matchup. The teams combined for 211 points earlier in the year, and 185 last week. Tonight, it should fall somewhere in between, good enough to surpass the 185.5-point total.
