World Cup co-hosts USA will be looking to build on their fantastic display against Paraguay when they face an Australia side that also impressed in their Group D opener.
It took just seven minutes for the USA to open the scoring against Paraguay in Inglewood before going on to score another three goals to pick up a deserved 4-1 win.
Australia also head to Seattle in high spirits after defying the odds in their opening game against Turkey.
Despite having just 28 per cent possession and losing the shot count 30-9, the Socceroos recorded a 2-0 victory and will be targeting another upset against the USA, although they may need another bout of good fortune to avoid defeat.
The USA were dominant in their opening-round win over Paraguay, and they look set to win two World Cup games for the first time since 2002 when they face Australia.
The Stars and Stripes beat Australia 2-1 in a friendly in October and have won four of their seven games since, with their defeats in this period coming against European heavyweights Germany, Portugal and Belgium.
However, the lack of clean sheets will be a concern for head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has seen his side concede 16 goals in their last nine matches, failing to shut out the opposition in any of them.
Australia have scored in four of their last five games and will be confident of troubling the co-hosts’ defence, but a repeat of their feat against Turkey looks unlikely.
They were dominated in that game and scored with two of their four shots on target. A side less wasteful than Turkey could have racked up plenty of goals, and the USA could be the side to deliver a defeat on the Socceroos.
Folarin Balogun was the star of the show as he spearheaded the USA’s attack against Paraguay, and he can add to his goals tally against Australia.
The Monaco man scored twice in the first half in California to take his international goals tally to 11 strikes in 28 appearances.
He had five shots, hitting the target with three of them, and he has scored seven goals in his last 10 appearances for club and country.
Haji Wright led the line when these two sides last locked horns in October 2025, and he scored both of the USA’s goals.
Balogun is expected to retain his starting berth after his fantastic opening-round performance, and he looks good value for at least one goal against a side that have conceded in five of their seven matches since that loss to the USA last year.
Both previous meetings between the USA and Australia have featured at least three goals and, following their performance against Paraguay, another high-scoring affair could be on the cards in Seattle.
Thirty-four goals have been scored in the Stars and Stripes’ last eight games for an average of 4.25 goals per game, and over 2.5 goals has landed in seven of these.
Australia’s opener against Turkey may have only produced two goals, but there were 39 shots in total and there could have been a few more goals on a different day.
The favorites will be looking for another statement win to cement their position at the top of Group D, and that should yield some goals for the home crowd to celebrate.
