Switzerland punched their ticket to the knockout phase by finishing first in Group B with seven points. Their campaign started shakily with a 1-1 draw against Qatar, where a late own goal by Muheim denied them an opening win. However, the Swiss team found its form and followed up with two consecutive victories.
Their redemption came in a commanding 4-1 triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina. This match introduced the world to the immense talent of Manzambi, a 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder who came off the bench in the final 20 minutes to score a remarkable brace.
The Swiss then secured a 2-1 victory over Canada in their final group stage match, with goals from Vargas and the in-form Manzambi. Their Round of 32 fixture was a straightforward affair, as they dispatched Algeria 2-0. Embolo opened the scoring just ten minutes in, and former Bologna player Ndoye sealed the win early in the second half.
Colombia also enjoyed a strong group stage, finishing ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in Group K. Los Cafeteros began with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan, coached by Fabio Cannavaro, thanks to goals from Munoz, Luis Diaz, and Campaz. Munoz scored again in their second match to secure a 1-0 victory against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The highly anticipated clash with Portugal, pitting James Rodríguez against Cristiano Ronaldo, was a cagey affair that ended in a goalless draw. In the Round of 32, a single goal from Arias was enough to overcome Ghana and book their place in the next round.
