Everyone better get used to living in a world where the New York Knicks are NBA champions. After stunning the home San Antonio crowd again on Friday night, the series heads to the Big Apple and Madison Square Garden at 8:30 PM on Sunday night.
The Knicks will play the first NBA Finals game at the “world’s most famous arena” with a 2-0 lead after winning their 13th consecutive playoff game, the second-longest postseason win streak in NBA history.
Karl Anthony-Towns had 21 points and 13 rebounds while Jalen Brunson scored 20 points, including the critical final 3, as New York defeated the Spurs on Friday, 105-104. It was the team's eighth consecutive victory on the road this postseason.
Mikal Bridges added 20 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Landry Shamet added 13 points off the bench as the Knicks had 29 assists to just 12 turnovers. However, the final result was closer than it should have been.
The Spurs, who fell to 6-5 at home in the playoffs, overcame a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit, and had the chance to win late. Victor Wembanyama had 29 points and nine rebounds, but made a couple of mistakes late, and could not make his final shot attempt.
The usual Spurs supporting cast made their contributions. De’Aaron Fox was stronger offensively with 20 points, Devin Vassell had 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists, and Stephon Castle scored 14 points.
Rookie Dylan Harper continues to be a problem for New York off the bench, as he added 15 points and six rebounds in 32 minutes. The Knicks’ reserves, however, did outscore San Antonio’s, 27-19.
Will San Antonio be able to stem the tide at Madison Square Garden, where it hasn’t won since November 23, 2019, or will the Knicks continue their storybook postseason with their 14th consecutive victory?
At this point, how can you pick against the Knicks? Sure, they made the ending in San Antonio nervier than it should have been on Friday night, but they still won their eighth straight road contest this postseason. That’s unheard of.
New York became just the third team in NBA history to win the first two games of the Finals on the road. The other two, the 1993 Bulls and the 1995 Rockets, both won the title.
Brunson has been as steady as they come in the playoffs, averaging 26 points and 6.8 assists. Even though San Antonio held him to 20 points on Friday, 10 less than he had in Game 1, it still couldn’t account for the three-time All-Star guard in the game’s waning moments. He’s as good a bet as any to will his team over the line.
Tonight is going to be a madhouse. The Knicks are 6-1 at Madison Square Garden this postseason, having won the last five. President Trump is rumored to be there. The celebrities will be out in full effect.
New York has everything going for it. The Knicks destroyed the Spurs here in the regular season by 25, they beat San Antonio for the NBA Cup championship in Las Vegas in December, and they have won six straight against the Spurs in New York.
Take the Knicks to earn a commanding 3-0 Finals lead with a win tonight, and take them to cover the 2-point spread as favorites as well.
Both games in this Finals have been played well to the Under. The total has dropped a couple of points heading into tonight, but it won’t matter. The Knicks have discovered the blueprint for beating Wembanyama and the Spurs, and they are sticking to it.
If San Antonio cannot take control of the boards, nothing will change. Don’t look for that to happen tonight. Take the Under.
