Sam Laporta Injury Update & Week 1 Status

Providing an update on Sam Laporta's injury situation, including best and worst case scenario's for the Indianapolis Colts wide receiver.

Sam LaPorta is currently sidelined from practice due to a hip injury sustained after taking a hit.

The Detroit Lions tight end has a history of injury concerns, having undergone season-ending back surgery late last November.

While this hip injury is unrelated to last season's back issue, it is unwelcome news for Dan Campbell's side. The team appointed offensive coordinator Drew Petzing this offseason, the coach responsible for developing Trey McBride into one of the league's top tight ends in Arizona last year.

LaPorta could see a significant increase in production under Petzing, building on his performance last season. In nine games in 2025, LaPorta caught 40 passes for 489 yards and three touchdowns.

Will Sam Laporta play in Week 1 of the NFL season?

The Detroit Lions are optimistic that Sam Laporta will able to play in Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, September 13th, but his status still remains unclear.

The best case for Laporta is that his injury heals quickly and he is available for the Saints game.

The worst case scenario is that the tight end misses the first few weeks of the season. He is unlikely to land on the PUP list ahead of the season, but if there is any reaggravation, it's not out of the question.
