The Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights are set for Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Golden Knights have taken firm control of this series with a 3-0 lead, and are now one win away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final. On the other side, the Avalanche are looking to pick up a win to stay alive and fight for another day.
Puck drop for Game 4 is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.
Game 3 resulted in an extremely demoralizing loss for the Avalanche. Colorado led 3-0 after the 1st period and seemed well on their way to making this a 2-1 series.
However, the Golden Knights stormed back to tie the game in the 2nd period and went on to win by a score of 5-3. It was an unprecedented loss for the Avalanche, who owned a record of 74-1 in the postseason when leading by 3+ goals.
The loss deflated the Avalanche significantly, as head coach Jared Bednar said after the game that the loss was “as low as it can get.”
Now, it’s tough to see Colorado rallying for a Game 4 win on the road.
Colorado was able to get Cale Makar back in Game 3, but Nathan MacKinnon suffered an injury of his own after blocking a shot in the 2nd period.
He had to be helped off the ice and his status for Game 4 is in serious question. He is officially listed as day-to-day, and not having him in the lineup would be another serious blow to the Avs. Along with MacKinnon, Valeri Nichushkin is also battling an injury of his own, and his Game 4 status is also in doubt.
Not much has gone right for Colorado in this series, and there isn’t much to suggest things are going to drastically change anytime soon. Teams that fall behind 0-3 in the best-of-seven conference finals are 0-49 all-time in NHL history.
The Golden Knights are 18-4-1 with John Tortorella leading the way, and he has his team poised for a Stanley Cup birth. With the way the Golden Knights are rolling right now, ride the momentum and back Vegas at home in Game 4.
As previously mentioned, the injuries to MacKinnon and Nichushkin are significant blows for the Avs. MacKinnon is among the best players in the world and he leads Colorado with 15 points on 7 goals and 8 assists through 12 postseason games.
Nichushkin has 4 points this postseason, but his physical style of play will be missed by the Avalanche if he cannot suit up.
Add in the fact that Vegas goaltender Carter Hart has posted save percentages of .924, .968, and .947 in this series, and Colorado’s offensive attack could have a tough time getting things going.
Knowing that goal-scoring may be tough to come by, look for the Avalanche to put an emphasis on their defensive structure. Colorado gave up 5 consecutive goals in Game 3, and after that underwhelming effort, Bednar should have his group ready to avenge that defensive performance.
The under cashed in the first 2 games of this series, and it wasn’t until Vegas caught fire with 5 consecutive goals that Game 3 went over the total. With a total of 6 in this one, look to the under.
