There’s plenty of drama to expect in this year’s Stanley Cup Finals Game 4 as the Vegas Golden Knights takes home ice against the Carolina Hurricanes at 8 pm ET on Tuesday for the second time following a rowdy Game 3 on Saturday.
The Golden Knights gave their fans quite the scare when their 4-0 second-period lead was leveled 4-4 by the Hurricanes in the third, although Shea Theodore saved the day with the game-winner five minutes into double overtime.
Mitch Marner made NHL history, scoring the fastest Stanley Cup Final natural hat-trick in six minutes and 10 seconds to give his team the original 4-0 lead. Vegas has scored 20 goals in their last five matchups but the last four have been decided by just one goal.
The Canes' valiant fightback from a four-goal deficit nearly succeeded, but they lacked the final answer on the road to surrender the series lead once again. They had 33 shots with just four sneaking past Carter Hart, all in the third period, but the Golden Knights ultimately dug deepest for the final double OT goal.
Carolina seeks a successful result to level matters before heading back to the Lenovo Center, where we know they can do their damage. They have scored at least four goals in their last five straight games, yet have only posted a 3-2 record, showing how difficult Vegas has been to play against.
So far in this series, all three games have ended in a close one-goal margin of victory, with Vegas winning twice, while it has not lost by multiple goals in any of the last 11 games in this postseason.
While the Canes ran away with the Eastern Conference Finals series, winning the last two games by a combined 10-1, winning let alone covering a -1.5 puckline, has been much harder against the Golden Knights.
Considering how offensively talented both sides are and how close these games have already been, this one looks set to be another one-goal margin result, which makes the +1.5 spread for the home underdogs, despite leading the series, an appealing option.
Every game so far in this series has concluded with at least seven goals or more, while there have been nine in two of them. The Golden Knights have yet to score fewer than three goals in the finals, and have twice hit five.
While the Canes are having a rough time in this series, they have still managed to score four goals in each of them, despite losing twice.
With Vegas at 3.74 goals per game and the Canes at 3.38 goals per game, the trend of at least seven goals looks set to continue.
Gifted Golden Knights winger Pavel Dorofeyev led Vegas with 37 regular-season goals and had scored 10 in the playoffs coming into this. He shared the team lead with Brett Howden, who has now pulled away with three goals in three games against Carolina, while Marner has drawn level with Saturday's hat-trick.
Never count out the goal-seeking Dorofeyev though as it is surely only a matter of time before he scores his first Stanley Cup goal against the Canes this postseason, particularly spending plenty of time on the ice with Jack Eichel and Marner.
