Liam Hicks Injury Update: Marlins Slugger Heading to IL

Miami Marlins C/1B/DH Liam Hicks showed up to the team's clubhouse on Sunday with lower back tightness and was subsequently placed on the injured list.

Hicks was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the San Francisco Giants and the team hoped that he would feel better for Sunday's matinee. However, he still felt stiffness in his back on Sunday morning and was put on the 10-day IL just minutes before first pitch.

Manager Clayton McCollough said Hicks will undergo imaging early this week to gauge the severity and determine a recovery timetable.

"We're hoping on the shorter end of the timeline for the IL stint," McCollough said, per MLB.com. "A lot of that will be over the next two, three days, where he's more limited with activity, just how he responds, and some of the inflammations gets out of there."

In response to Hicks' injury, the Marlins called-up catcher Brain Navarreto and placed righty reliever Josh Ekness on the 60-day IL.

Hicks leads the team with 13 homers and 53 RBIs while slashing .278/.359/.472 - good for a 134 OPS+. He's one of a few players with a higher walk rate (10.1%) than strikeout rate (9.7%) and is a key cog for a Marlins team that is 40-38 and has won four games in a row.

When Could Liam Hicks Return?

The earliest Hicks could return is Thursday, July 2nd against the Colorado Rockies, but much of his timetable will depend on his testing that will happen soon.
