The Brazilian tennis player has not recovered from an abdominal injury that previously forced him out of the Cincinnati Masters 1000.
João Fonseca announced on Monday that he is withdrawing from the US Open, which begins this Sunday. The 20-year-old Brazilian has failed to recover from an abdominal injury sustained earlier this month during the Cincinnati Masters 1000.
Currently ranked world No. 26, Fonseca will miss the final Grand Slam of the year, ending his streak of seven consecutive appearances in major tournaments. In a statement announcing his decision, Fonseca expressed his disappointment about missing the event and thanked fans for their support.
"After undergoing tests and starting treatment on my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to recover 100% and be able to compete at a high level. Therefore, I unfortunately will not be able to play in the US Open. It was not an easy decision to make, as this is a very special tournament for me. João Fonseca joins a list of 17 players, both men and women, who will be absent from this year's US Open. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is also out as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Other significant absences on the men's side include former top-10 players Holger Rune and Jack Draper.
In the women's draw, the most prominent names to withdraw are world No. 15 Victoria Mboko and Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion who is currently ranked 68th.
