History of the US Open

The US Open is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, dating back to 1881.

Originally known as the U.S. National Championships, the inaugural tournament was held on grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island which is now home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Richard Sears won the men's singles at the first tournament in 1881, which was the first of his seven consecutive singles titles.

Only male tennis club members competed in the six five U.S. National Championships, and the first women's championship was held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in 1887. 17-year-old Philadelphia native Ellen Hansell was the first women's champion.

In 1915, the championships were permanently moved to New York City, and was officially designated as one of the world's major tournaments in 1924.

The Open Era began in 1968 when professional tennis players were able to compete at the US Open for the first. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hardcourts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, after previously being played on clay and/or grass courts. Jimmy Connors is the only individual to have won US Open singles titles on all three surfaces (grass, clay, and hardcourt), while Chris Evert is the only woman to have won US Open singles titles on two surfaces (clay and hardcourt).

The US Open is has famously never missed a tournament. It is the only Grand Slam that was not affected by cancellation due to World War I and World War II, nor interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer have won the most men's singles titles (5) since the start of the Open Era. Chris Evert and Serena Williams have won the most women's singles titles (6) since the start of the Open Era.
