Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique strain on Monday and will be placed on the 15-day IL, per ESPN.
The Grade 2 strain usually has a recovery timeline of 4-to-6 weeks.
Swanson swung and missed on a fastball, thrown by St. Louis Cardinals' starter Hunter Dobbins, and immediately threw down his helmet in frustration, grimaced in pain, and walked back to the dugout in discomfort in Sunday afternoon's loss.
"It just felt like my left side kind of tightened up on me," Swanson said, per MLB.com. "It obviously was enough where I didn't feel like I needed to keep going."
Manager Craig Counsell decided to place Swanson on the 15-day IL after he underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed the severity.
With six weeks left in the regular season, Swanson's injury may hold him out until the start of the playoffs. Chicago is 72-53, in second place and five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead, but they hold a comfortable five game lead in the Wild Card race.
Swanson has been mostly his usual self this season, offering tremendous defense at a premium position and well on his way to hitting over 20 home runs for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
