Padres vs. Giants: Prediction, Props & Best Bets (9/13)

The San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants are set for an NL West matchup on Sunday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

The Padres enter this contest with an overall record of 80-68, which puts them in the third wild card spot in the National League. They own a 1.5-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks, so finding the win column in this matchup could be vital to their playoff chances.

On the other side, the Giants are 62-87 and have already been eliminated from playoff contention. Tony Vitello’s first MLB season hasn’t gone as planned, leaving the Giants with the second-worst record in the NL with just a handful of games to go.

First pitch is slated for 7:20 p.m. ET on Peacock.

Padres vs. Giants betting picks and predictions

Padres ML (-130)

The Padres have dominated the season series against the Giants, leading 8-4 in their 12 head-to-head matchups, and enter Sunday’s contest having won five games in a row in this series. They should be able to keep that success rolling as they send Nick Pivetta to the mound.

Pivetta made just four starts at the beginning of the season before landing on the IL with an elbow injury. He missed nearly five months, and made his return to the San Diego rotation last week against the Nationals. Pivetta put forth a great outing, as he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits in a 3-2 Padres win.

Pivetta faced the Giants back on April 1, and he shut them down to the tune of 5.0 shutout innings while surrendering just a single hit in a 7-1 Padres win. That outing, as well as his most recent start, should give him plenty of confidence heading into this matchup.

The Padres also have a significant edge when it comes to the bullpen. San Diego’s bullpen ERA of 3.43 ranks fourth in MLB, while San Francisco’s bullpen ERA of 4.18 ranks 19th.

The Padres seem to have the Giants number this season, and San Diego is riding a six-game win streak heading into this Sunday night matchup. Look for the Padres to keep things rolling with another win.

Over 7.0 (-110)

San Francisco starting pitcher Logan Webb is having his worst season since 2020. Webb had posted an ERA under 3.50 every year since then, until this season. He enters this contest owning a 4.10 ERA through 26 starts, and has allowed 17 earned runs over his last four starts in 16.2 innings of work. The San Diego offense has plated at least 23 total runs over their last three games, so Webb could have his hands full in this one.

Pivetta has been solid this season, but his extended time on the IL can still be worrisome. Having made just one start back, it’s possible he is still finding a groove back on the mound.

The Giants have scored 61 runs through 11 games in September, which is the seventh-most in baseball so far this month. Pivetta and the San Diego bullpen can still be strong, but San Francisco should be able to score enough to take this one over the listed total of 7.0.
