Torvill and Dean are names that ring familiar for a large majority of the British general public, but who are the people behind the names, and what is their background?
Sir Christopher Dean and Dame Jayne Torvill are former professional ice dancers who, together, achieved national fame after securing gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.
Jayne Torvill was born in Nottingham in 1957, and held a keen interest in ice skating from the age of eight.
Torvill and her then partner, Michael Hutchinson, secured gold at the British Pairs Figure Skating Championship back in 1971, aged just 14.
She eventually teamed up with Dean in 1975 and the pair competed together at the 1980 Winter Olympics, leading to both making the decision to quit their day jobs and focus on ice dancing full-time.
Christopher Dean was also born in Nottinghamshire, one year after his eventual partner, in 1958. The young Dean held an interest in both football and ice skating, taking up the latter at 10 years old.
Dean became British Junior Dance champion with his original partner Sandra Elson, but the pair split and he would later team up with Torvil.
Initially, Dean joined the Nottinghamshire Police Force, balancing his career alongside the sport, before later resigning from the force to focus on ice skating in 1980.
Together, Torvill and Dean secured a substantial haul of 16 gold medals and two bronze during their renowned careers, including their famous gold winning performance at the 1984 Games in Sarajevo.

Dancing to Maurice Ravel's 'Bolero', Torvill and Dean won gold in Yugoslavia, with one of the most famed performances by British athletes in the history of the Olympic Games.
Their performance in 1984 was the highest score in Olympic figure skating history, with the British duo receiving 12 perfect 6.0 scores and six 5.9's from the judges.
Torvill and Dean turned professional following their gold winning performance, but after a 10-year break from the Games the pair returned to the Olympics for the 1994 Games in Norway.
Dancing to "Let's Face the Music and Dance" the duo, now both aged in their late 30's, secured a bronze medal for their performance.
The pair would retire from competitive skating following the Lillehammer Games, before later retiring from the sport altogether in 1998.
They would move into the entertainment industry following retirement, whilst also embarking on performative tours in 2014 and 2025.
In December 2025, Torvill and Dean were awarded Damehood and Knighthood in the King's 2026 New Year Honours list, recognising their services to ice skating.
