West Ham were forced to settle for a point in their London derby on Friday night after a penalty save from Pierce Charles denied the Hammers a second-half comeback.
Nuno Espirito Santo's side fell off top spot just prior to the international break when they were held to a 2-2 draw away at Millwall, but had an opportunity to reclaim their place when QPR visited the London Stadium.
For the first time since their relegation to the second tier Tomas Soucek returned to competitive action for the Hammers, with Santo naming him in the starting XI.
The long-serving Czech midfielder had been recovering from an injury suffered representing his country at the 2026 World Cup in North America, but was entrusted with a start after playing in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.
Just 18 minutes into the game Soucek's return would prove disastrous, with referee Ruebyn Ricardo pointing to the spot after he was adjudged to have fouled an onrushing Paul Smyth.
Video replays would show the decision to be extremely harsh but Nicolas Madsen was happy to convert from 12 yards and put his side in front.
The hosts enjoyed long stretches with the ball after going behind but largely struggled to put anything substantive together as QPR retained their lead heading into the half-time interval.
The fans in attendance made their feelings clear as the players made their way down the tunnel but it would take time for the hosts to spring into life following the restart.
Both team made changes around the hour mark but it was the Hammers that would finally seize the initiative when Bowen lashed his strike beyond Charles to take his tally for the season to seven.
The Hammers pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages and their persistence was rewarded with moments left in the 90 as the referee pointed to the spot for a second time.
This time the decision was by no means a controversial one, with Amadou Mbengue penalised for an egregious shirt pull.
Bowen stepped up but was denied by a magnificent stop from Charles who subsequently produced an even better save to deny a rebound from Engels and ensure his team walked away with a point.
