The Black Cats enter at this stage of the competition due to their UEFA Europa League commitments, with Regis Le Bris' men commencing their European tour with the visit of Eredivisie outfit AZ Alkmaar next Wednesday.
Sunderland have four points from their opening three Premier League fixtures and they continued their strong home form at the end of August by defeating Fulham at the Stadium of Light.
Hull City, on the other hand, reached round three of the competition for the first time in six years after defeating Stoke City on penalties.
The Tigers have made an emphatic return to the Premier League, defeating Manchester United and Coventry City before holding Aston Villa to a goalless draw. Hull are the only side in England's top four divisions who are yet to concede a goal in the league.
