Sheffield United braced for more departures with £3 million star set for exit

Sheffield United are willing to sanction the departures of four first-team players before the end of the month as the club look to raise money to help fund new acquisitions.

Championship

Blades boss Chris Wilder is having to wheel and deal in the transfer market this summer as the club undertake their first Championship campaign without parachute payments.

To help offset their previous expenditure, the likes of Andre Brooks and Gus Hamer have been sold over the past couple of months, with a number of other players now also reportedly set to exit the Bramall Lane doors.

According to Football League World, central defender Mark McGuinness remains up for sale despite his recent inclusion in United's starting line-up against Birmingham City at the weekend.

Others likely to be given the green light to complete moves away include £3 million defender Nils Zatterstrom, fringe goalkeeper Ivo Grbic and Welsh international wing-back Rhys Norrington-Davies.

Zatterstrom arrived from Malmo as part of the club's much-maligned AI recruitment model 12 months ago but hasn't yet made his senior debut for the club.

He spent last season on loan at Serie A side Genoa but failed to make much of an impact, with Wilder now keen to offload the young defender permanently.

Forgotten goalkeeper Grbic hasn't played for the Blades since 2024, having shipped 30 goals in across his 10 matches in the Premier League at the tail end of the previous campaign.

The former Atletico Madrid number two has undertaken loan spells in Turkey across each of the past couple of seasons and whilst there has been interest in another loan deal, Wilder would ideally like to cash-in.

Meanwhile, Norrington-Davies also looks likely to end his spell in South Yorkshire after falling out of favour with Wilder.

The aggressive and front-footed full-back was a first-team regular for Queens Park Rangers as he spent a year on loan in West London in 2025/26, and had hoped to force himself back into contention at Sheffield United.

But with Sam McCallum and Harrison Burrows at Wilder's disposal, he's happy to give the green light to a permanent exit, with a number of Championship clubs believed to have shown interest in snapping up the 27-year-old.

News of the potential end-of-summer-window fire-sale comes amidst speculation the club could be handed a 12-point deduction.

Former owner Prince Abdullah is currently in a dispute with the current Sheffield United bosses, COH Sports, who completed their takeover of the Championship side in December 2024.

It’s alleged that Prince Abdullah that he is still owed £35 million as part of the takeover agreement, leading to a winding-up petition being served to the club earlier this summer.

If a winding-up order is granted, then Sheffield United risk being placed into administration, an outcome that would automatically incur an immediate 12 point deduction in-line with EFL rules.
