Rwanda to join F1 calendar following landmark 10-year agreement

Formula 1 will return to Africa after a 10-year agreement was reached to stage a race in Rwanda.

Rwanda will begin to host races from the early 2030s and will mark the sport's return to the continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix.

Construction will soon begin on a brand new, purpose built circuit in Bugesera, with Formula 1 anticipating completion of the track "early in the next decade".

The addition of Rwanda to the calendar means that Formula 1 will stage a race in every inhabited continent on the planet, with FIA president Mohamed Ben Sulayem describing the agreement as a "historic moment for the sport".

"This is an important step in the continued global growth of motorsport. Rwanda has demonstrated a strong commitment to delivering a world-class event," Ben Sulayem added.

"This is also about creating a lasting legacy, inspiring new generations, developing talent and opening new opportunities for motorsport across Africa and beyond."

Multiple world champion Lewis Hamilton has been a huge advocate for racing in Africa in recent years, pushing for Formula 1 to re-establish its presence on the continent.

Prior to the Singapore Grand Prix, Hamilton told reporters: "It is, for me, the most important continent, to be honest, the most beautiful continent. We're on all the other continents but that one and there should be no reason for it."

Formula 1 has already announced a stacked 24-race schedule for 2027, where Portugal are set to return as a host country on a two-year deal. There are also several countries whose deals are set to expire in the coming years: Mexico and Singapore have agreements in place until 2028 and Japan until 2029.

Italian ace Kimi Antonelli is currently strolling to a maiden Drivers' Championship success after building up an advantage of more than 100 points as the season enters its final stages.
