Rangers make blockbuster move in an attempt to re-sign former loan star

Scottish giants Rangers have opened talks with Besiktas over a blockbuster move to re-sign former loan star Vaclav Cerny this month.

Scottish Premiership

According to the Daily Record the Ibrox club have held detailed discussions with the Turkish side regarding the structure of a potential deal as they attempt to seal a return for the Czech star.

Cerny established himself as a huge fan-favourite in the Scottish capital during an explosive season-long loan from Wolfsburg in 2024/25.

The 28-year-old scored 18 goals and assisted a further nine in all competitions before joining the Turkish club 12 months ago after Rangers pulled out of a prior-arranged deal following the appointment of Russell Martin.

However, the attacker has remained on the club's watchlist since his departure and they have now made their move, although it remains to be seen as to whether their attempts to lure him back will prove successful.

Scottish football journalist Andy Newport has claimed the deal hangs in the balance as a consequence of the finances required to broker the move.

It's believed Besiktas hold an £8 million valuation on the player, whilst his current salary of around £2 million a year could also be problematic for Rangers.

"While he is understood to be keen on a return to Scotland having enjoyed his previous stint at Ibrox, Cerny would have to be persuaded to take a substantial hit on his wages," the article stated.

"Gers chiefs are now weighing up whether it would be worthwhile to push ahead with a deal for the former Czech Republic winger or to look elsewhere."

Derek McInnes is keen to bolster his side's goalscoring options after being frustrated in his search for new frontline acquisitions this summer.

A big-money move for PSV star Couhaib Driouech fell through earlier this month after an issue arose during the player's medical whilst the club have also seen two bids rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion for in-demand wideman Amario Cozier-Duberry.
