Professional football bettor Nick Goff has revealed he's happy to oppose the two title favourites in League One ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday dropped into the third tier last season, albeit in hugely different circumstances. The Foxes, fresh off Premier League relegation, suffered back-to-back drops, while Wednesday were doomed before the season began owing to off-field issues.
It's no surprise to see Leicester as favourites for the League One title, particularly given some of the current crop were deemed Premier League quality just two years ago, but Goff told the Football Betting Club podcast that he's concerned at the stability of the club on the back of consecutive relegations, and wonders how quickly Russell Martin can impose his will on the side.
"I’m happy to oppose Leicester," said Goff. "They’re not as stable as West Ham for example, they’ve double dipped and a lot of players didn’t even have a relegation wage drop coming out of the Premier League never mind one going down to League One. I don’t think that’s a thing having two relegation drops.
"Their wage bill is still astronomical and they’ve got to get people off it and its hard when you’ve been that much of a failure two years running and I think Russell Martin when he goes into new clubs often takes a little bit of time to get his style of play across and hit the ground running, so there’s enough reason for me [to oppose them].
"If they get 100 points it can't be surprising but I don’t want to be with them.
"On Sheffield Wednesday, I think it’s great the club has finally turned a corner and the fans acquitted themselves brilliantly last year. The club will improve and the signings – Barry Bannan and Louie Barry are proof that the corner is turned.
"But to do it all in one summer is a big ask and the chief executive has come out and almost tried to temper it – 'yeah we’re going for promotion but give us a chance here' – If this is a two-year job to get back to the Championship, that’s no disgrace whatsoever and the price is quite short now."
Should the two title favourites falter, Goff believes a newly promoted side could be the ones to take advantage.
"The team I like is MK Dons. I think they’re one of those teams – cliché alert – who'll be better at a better level. Playing at League Two level didn’t help them in the way the game’s played down there.
"Going up a level might help them, up against more football sides. The additions – Ryan Wintle, Dan Barlaser – they’ve made good additions and they were a really good League Two team, better than the league table suggested at the end.
"In what could be a congested top half of the table, they’ve got as good a chance as anyone."
