The Cincinnati Bengals head to Houston to take on the Texans at Reliant Stadium on Sunday as Joe Burrow faces off against young passer C.J.Stroud.
The quarterback matchup may not be the defining battle of this clash, however, with each team’s defence under the microscope for different reasons after Week 1.
Cincinnati’s front office seems to have struck gold with their offseason upgrades as fresh defensive end Boye Mafe plus new defensive tackles Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen shone up front while free agent acquisition Bryan Cook looked assured at safety.
The Bengals defence allowed only 282 yards, forced four fumbles they recovered and had four sacks in a 33-27 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Their passing game didn’t fully ignite last week, but tight end Mike Gesicki exploded for 78 yards and a touchdown, while Chase Brown flourished in the Bengals’ backfield and Burrow did an efficient job of moving the chains.
But with Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter stalking him from both edges, Burrow’s protection will be tested early and often by DeMeco Ryans’ defensive front.
The Texans will be looking for a bounce-back performance after last week’s 31-36 loss to the Buffalo Bills, who accumulated over 400 total yards of offence.
The Texans still had a chance to win the game at the death when Stroud drove them down inside the Bills’ 10-yard line, but he was sacked twice and coughed up the ball for a game-clinching turnover on the second.
It won’t be any easier for Stroud this week in the likely absence of top wide receiver Nico Collins, whose hamstring injury leaves the Texans without their most dangerous weapon.
Best Bet – Cincinnati Bengals +2.5 @ 20/21
Alternative Bet – Over 45.5 points @ 10/11
Bet Builder – Joe Burrow - Over 243.5 passing yards, Mike Gesicki - Over 2.5 Receptions, Chase Brown anytime TD @ 11/2
Best Bet: Cincinnati Bengals +2.5 @ 20/21
Houston face a huge problem if Collins is ruled out because Stroud’s remaining receiving weapons are solid but lack the explosiveness required to make the big chunk plays they need to keep pace with Burrow if this becomes a shootout.
The Texans’ best chance is to dominate time of possession through running back David Montgomery, who scored three touchdowns on his his debut last week.
Cincinnati’s improved defensive front should be better equipped to slow him down, however, and they can keep this close as long as Burrow avoids any major mistakes.
Brown controlled the tempo on the ground last week and the defence - led by breakout edge rusher Mafe - showed signs of life after last season’s constant struggles.
If the Bengals get ahead and Stroud is forced into a pass-heavy game, the advantage swings heavily toward Cincinnati.
Alternative Bet: Over 45.5 points @ 10/11
Both teams have the firepower to score quickly, and both defences have vulnerabilities.
Burrow should find more rhythm in Week 2, especially with Gesicki emerging as a reliable safety valve.
Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase won’t stay quiet for long, and Brown’s ability to break tackles adds another scoring threat.
Only four of the Bengals’ last 15 games have seen fewer than 45 points scored, so this looks one for the over.
Houston have also shown they can put up points as Stroud threw two touchdowns last week and Montgomery is a proven red-zone finisher. Even without Collins, the Texans have enough to contribute to a high total.
Burrow - Over 243.5 Passing Yards
Gesicki - Over 2.5 Receptions
Chase Brown anytime TD
Pays 11/2
Burrow should go close to 250 yards passing if Cincinnati’s offensive line can keep Anderson and Hunter at bay.
Gesicki had five catches last week and should be targeted frequently again as he’s a mismatch against Houston’s linebackers.
Brown is the safest touchdown pick on the board because he is Cincinnati’s unquestioned workhorse and gets the bulk of red‑zone touches.

Anderson Jr. and Hunter combined for three sacks in Week 1
Cincinnati’s defence looks rejuvenated, with Boye Mafe stepping up as Trey Hendrickson’s replacement and playing a key role in the team’s four forced turnovers.
The Bengals’ offensive line remains the biggest question mark but if they hold up, Cincinnati should control the game.
Houston’s defence is elite at the edges and strong at corner with Derek Stingley Jr., but losing No.1 wide receiver Nico Collins would be a devastating blow.
Montgomery must carry the load to keep Stroud from facing too many obvious passing downs.
