Australian Open Men

Find out who has made the most men's and women's singles Australian Open finals in the Open Era.

Most men's Australian Open finals

Novak Djokovic - 10 finals

Novak Djokovic's record in the Australian Open reads 10 finals, 10 wins. It's a record that feels unlikely to ever be surpassed, with the Serb three clear of his closest rival in terms of finals reached and four clear in terms of finals won.

Roger Federer - 7 finals

Despite very much being dethroned by Rafael Nadal in 2008/09, Roger Federer miraculously regained his best form nearly a decade later to reach two more finals in 2017 and 2018, winning both.

Rafael Nadal - 6 finals

After beating Federer in 2009, Rafael Nadal would lose to Novak Djokovic twice, Stan Wawrinka and Federer before capitalising on Djokovic being denied entry to Australia in 2022, coming from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.

Stefan Edberg - 5 finals

First contesting an Australian Open final in 1985, Stefan Edberg beat fellow Swede Mats Wilander in straight sets, successfully defending his title 13 months later against Pat Cash. Despite making three more finals, Edberg would retire against Ivan Lendl, then losing in four sets in back-to-back years to Jim Courier.

Andy Murray - 5 finals

The only player to have appeared in more than three Australian Open finals and not win any, Andy Murray lost in straight sets in his first appearance to Roger Federer and then had the misfortune of running into Novak Djokovic for the other four.

Perhaps Murray wouldn't have reached the levels he did if not for the likes of Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic pushing him on, but it's hard to think that had he played in another era that he wouldn't have retired with several more titles.

Most women's Australian Open finals

Serena Williams - 8 finals

Facing different opponents in each of her first five Australian Open finals, Serena Williams won all five, first against sister Venus.

Williams then made three straight finals between 2015 and 2017, beating Maria Sharapova first before losing her first Australian Open final to Angelique Kerber, beating sister Venus again in 2017.

Evonne Goolagong - 7 finals

Nobody, male or female, has made more consecutive Australian Open finals than Australian native Evonne Goolagong. What made her feat even more impressive is that she lost the first three before beating Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Renata Tomanova between 1974 and 1976, taking her fourth title two years later against Helen Gourlay.

Martina Navratilova - 6 finals

Perhaps the best female grass court player of all time, Martina Navratilova made nine semi-finals in her 10 appearances on the hard courts of the Australian Open.

After reaching the final in her maiden outing in 1975, Navratilova didn't return to the event until 1980. She would then make the final in five of the next six tournaments, winning three.

Martina Hingis - 6 finals

Sharing the record of the most consecutive Australian Open finals with Evonne Goolagong, Hingis's finals were in reverse to Goolagong's. winning the first three against Mary Pierce (as a 16-year-old, no less), Conchita Martinez and Amelie Mauresmo, losing to Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati in the following three years.

Chris Evert - 6 finals

But for a self-imposed exile from the Australia Open in the late-1970s, Chris Evert would have surely reached more than the six finals she did.

Remarkably, Evert's entire record between 1974 and 1988 in the Australia Open read: runner-up, runner-up, winner, winner, runner-up, runner-up, never failing to reach the final in Melbourne.
