Marc Cucurella potential next club amid Chelsea exit links

Marc Cucurella is a wanted man.

Recent reports have claimed that a number of top European sides have been monitoring the 28-year-old full-back with a view to make a move in the summer.

According to The Athletic, Cucurella would be willing to depart for pastures new when the transfer window opens after being left frustrated following a campaign that saw the Blues limp to 10th in the Premier League table.

Change is afoot at Stamford Bridge and the imminent arrival of Xabi Alonso will be sure to shake up the club after a disappointing season but it remains to be seen whether Cucurella will opt for a change in the coming months.

While the Spanish international signed a contract extension last year, Alonso could yet allow him to move on as he attempts to reshape his squad; provided a team meets their valuation.

With a summer of speculation surrounding his future sure to follow, we've taken a look at four potential destinations for Cucurella should he opt to leave Chelsea.

Football

Barcelona

Barcelona

Cucurella has a long history with Barcelona, having emerged from the club's famed La Masia academy before making his first team debut in September 2017 during Ernesto Valverde's time in charge.

The club's current leadership are also said to be keen admirers of the defender, with their sporting director Deco having reportedly already made contact with his team surrounding a potential move.

However, a potential return to the Camp Nou is not as straightforward as it may seem at first glance.

Despite their recent successes Barcelona have endured a series of financial difficulties in recent years and are cognisant of not overspending, particularly in positions where they already have options. As such, any potential move from Hansi Flick's side would need to be financed by a current Barcelona defender leaving during the summer window.

Manchester City

Manchester City

In truth, Chelsea's 2025-26 season never recovered from Enzo Maresca's sudden departure in January. While a dramatic dip in form had certainly contributed to his exit, Maresca fractious relationship with the club's leadership structure is said to have been the final nail in the coffin.

His abrupt exit from Stamford Bridge appeared to have a detrimental impact on Cucurella's performances, but the pair could yet be reunited with Maresca set to replace Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager.

With the unenviable task of replacing the most decorated manager in recent Premier League history awaiting him, Maresca could look to draft in some familiar faces in Manchester and Cucurella would certainly fit that bill.

Nico O'Reilly impressed after being tasked to deputise on the left side of defence last season, but signing Cucurella could offer a long term solution in the position whilst allowing Maresca to bring O'Reilly into midfield.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid

Another club repeatedly linked with Cucurella in recent days is Atletico Madrid.

Los Colchoneros have made signing a new left-back one of their top priorities this summer and a move for the current first choice of the national team appears to be an obvious port of call.

Discussions between club and player are already said to have taken place, with Diego Simeone reportedly keen on getting a deal over the line at the earliest availability.

Atletico are serious in their interest and have the funds to meet Chelsea's asking price. The only potential obstacle that would stand in the way of a transfer is whether the player would favour a move to the Metropolitano Stadium.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid

Like their cross-city rivals, Real Madrid are also in the market for a new left back this summer.

Ferland Mendy missed almost the entirety of last season with recurring injury problems, with a torn tendon upon his return to action last month potentially sidelining the Frenchman until November.

Alvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia shared the role in Mendy's absence, but neither have definitively staked their claim for a starting place next season and the imminently returning Jose Mourinho may look to bolster his ranks in the transfer market.

Cucurella had actually come close to a move to the Spanish capital back in 2021 after impressing during a one-year stint with Getafe.

He ultimately found his way to the Premier League with Brighton, but the allure of the Bernabeu can be hard to deny and Cucurella could well be a Real Madrid player by the time the summer has come to an end.
