Liverpool sack Arne Slot with Andoni Iraola lined up as his successor

Liverpool have parted company with manager Arne Slot with immediate effect following a review into the failings of the 2025/26 season.

The Reds hierarchy have made the decision to end their two-year association with Slot after the club finished 25 points off the pace of Premier League champions Arsenal, despite significant investment in the previous summer transfer window.

A statement from Liverpool read: "Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way.

"He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation."

Slot faced immense pressure throughout the season as Liverpool toiled in the Premier League, were eliminated in the fouth round of the League Cup and were convincingly beaten by Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Reds also bowed out in the quarter-finals stage of the UEFA Champions League to finalists Paris Saint-Germain.

Slot had enough credit in the bank from his Premier League title triumph during his first season in charge to survive the campaign, but the Reds sporting director Richard Hughes and chief executive Billy Hogan believe the club need to move in a new direction.

Deteriorating results had irked the fanbase, but supporters were also frustrated by the style of play implemented by Slot with Liverpool alarmingly pedestrian and mundane to watch.

Despite spending £450m in the summer on the purchases of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool had regressed and the club's inability to enhance their defensive options cost them dearly as injuries began to mount.

The former Feyenoord coach had also been involved in a public dispute with Mohamed Salah, where the talismanic forward accused the club of "throwing hum under the bus" and revealed his relationship with Slot had broken down during a highly explosive interview.

Salah has since announced he will be departing the club this summer despite still possessing one year left on his current deal.

It's understood former Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola is being lined up to replace Slot at Anfield.

There's been great intrigue around the next destination of Iraola after the Basque coach confirmed he would be leaving the Cherries at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Iraola shortened into odds-on favourite for the Liverpool job a fortnight ago, but speculation cooled when it was thought Slot would stay on as Reds boss.

The 43-year-old was also linked with the Crystal Palace vacancy following Oliver Glasner's exit in what many deemed a sideways move, while Italian giants Milan had held discussions with Iraola after the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri.
