Leeds United finished 14th in the Premier League to make sure they did not go straight back into the Championship last season and their ambitions should be greater than just top-flight survival this time.
Before they begin their league campaign, they start a three-game trip to the USA with a game against Wrexham, before they take on Sunderland and Liverpool.
The Welsh team will be confident they can provide Daniel Farke’s team with a tough test on Sunday, having already played two friendlies before they get their second-tier campaign rolling.
Best Bet - Draw or Wrexham double chance @ 10/11
Alternative Bet - Over 3.5 goals @ 11/8
Bet Builder - Both teams to score & over 0.5 Wrexham first-half goals @ 8/5
Best Bet: Draw or Wrexham double chance @ 10/11
It is always difficult analysing pre-season friendlies because teams are often at different stages of their preparations and they can be at different levels of match fitness.
This is especially true when a team from the Championship faces a Premier League team. While there is usually a gap between the relative ability levels, that extra fitness can make all the difference.
Wrexham take on Leeds in Tampa knowing that their serious matches start with a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough on 7th August and their Championship opener 10 days later against Cardiff.
Meanwhile, Leeds will not be playing a competitive game until 22nd August when they face Nottingham Forest in their first Premier League game of the campaign.
This meeting will be the first time Leeds have been in action since they lost 3-0 at West Ham on the final day of the season, while Phil Parkinson’s Red Dragons have already played twice.
The Welsh outfit played out a goalless draw against Wisla Krakow and they then gained a 1-0 win over Manchester United and their confidence will have been boosted by the fact United boss Michael Carrick fielded a strong side in the first half of that contest.
Having just missed out on the playoffs last season, Wrexham should be fully focused by now and that extra level of preparation makes them good value to avoid defeat against a Leeds side who are not long off the beach.
Alternative Bet: Over 3.5 goals @ 11/8
Wrexham’s first two pre-season friendlies mustered a solitary goal but there looks a decent chance that this one will be a bit more open.
There should be a decent atmosphere at the Raymond James Stadium with the USA still basking in the enthusiasm of the World Cup and that could help generate entertainment.
The Red Dragons should be quick in their attempts to assert their authority and both teams did not have the strongest defences last season.
Only the relegated trio of Wolves, Burnley and West Ham, along with last-day survivors Tottenham, conceded more goals than Leeds in the Premier League last season, so we could witness an open affair.
Both teams to score
Over 0.5 Wrexham first-half goals
Pays 8/5
Wrexham failed to score in just two of their final 26 league games of last season and they look set to threaten Leeds.
The West Yorkshire side will be without Noah Okafor, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin should be determined to prove his worth at the start of his second season at Elland Road, so both teams should score.
Double that up with Wrexham finding the net in the first half. The Red Dragons will be keen to catch Leeds cold and hitting them hard from the off is the best way that Parkinson’s side can take control of the game.
