Jannik Sinner has been eliminated from the French Open after falling ill during his match against Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
The Italian star appeared to be cruising to victory in the second round of the French Open, leading comfortably at 6-3, 6-2, 5-1, before he began to feel unwell on the court.
Sinner attempted to continue playing, but the Argentine began to mount a comeback, closing the gap to 5-3.
At that point, the Sinner called the chair umpire's attention and, after a consultation with his physiotherapist, he reported feeling sick and nauseous.
The umpire paused the match, allowing the Italian to return to the locker room for a few minutes, but upon his return, Sinner was visibly not the same player.
The recent heatwave sweeping across France is thought to have contributed to his weakened state.
Cerundolo capitalised on the situation, completing a remarkable comeback, taking the third set 7-5, dominating the fourth 6-1 and sealing his victory by winning the final set 6-1.
Despite his French Open exit, initial reports suggest the issue is not serious.
It appears Sinner has suffered from heatstroke, which led to dehydration and prevented him from competing at his usual level.
