World No 1 Jannik Sinner has been forced to withdraw from the 2026 US Open due to injury.
The 25-year-old has been dealing with a recurring knee injury that has plagued him throughout the summer.
Sinner opted not to play in the Cincinnati Open earlier this month with a view to return to the court in time for the final Grand Slam of the year.
However, a flare up of his injury has ultimately forced him to withdraw from the tournament at Flushing Meadows, with Sinner announcing his decision on social media just a week before it is scheduled to get underway.
"Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year." Sinner wrote on Instagram.
"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
"I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart.
"I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."
The withdrawal is just the latest setback Sinner has suffered in what has been an injury-disrupted season for the Italian.
Sinner was unsuccessful in his efforts to complete a career Grand Slam at the French Open back in May as he was knocked out by World No 56 Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round.
In the lead up to the defence of his Wimbledon men's singles title Sinner did not play a single competitive match, but rebounded emphatically at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
After a couple of shaky performances in the early rounds, he grew in confidence as the tournament progressed and ultimately defeated Alexander Zverev in the final to become just the tenth man ever to have won back-to-back Wimbledon singles titles.
