Saratoga hosts the final leg of the US Triple Crown on Saturday evening, the Belmont Stakes, and it is sure to be a cracking contest even if no horse in the finale will have contested all three legs.
Five of the nine runners were last seen in the Kentucky Derby, including the first and second, Golden Tempo and Renegade. But will either of them be good enough to win here?. Or could there be a change of luck for one of the others from Kentucky?
The race is supported by five other Grade 1 contests on the card and Jonny Pearson, a handicapper and tipster for the Racing Post, is here to give you his best selections for the action.
21:13 Saratoga - Ag Bullet @ 9/4
21:52 Saratoga - Crude Velocity @ 1/1
00:04 Saratoga - Chief Wallabee @ 4/1
21:13 Saratoga - Ag Bullet @ 9/4
Our first selection on the card is experienced sprinter Ag Bullet. She comes here making her first start of 2026, but it must be assumed she is ready to run and ready to win the race.
Her previous two runs have yielded placed efforts at Del Mar towards the back end of 2025, with her last start coming over the mile, which is simply too short a trip for her. Prior to this, she had won a Grade 2 contest at Keeneland and this very race itself, in what was the best performance of her career.
She is proven over the course and distance, and provided in the same sort of form as we saw her in 12 months ago, she should take all the beating.
21:52 Saratoga - Crude Velocity @ 1/1
Next we have the Woody Stephens Stakes on dirt over 7f. The form of the Pat Mile Stakes last time looks by far the strongest on offer, with first and second, Crude Velocity and Englishman taking each other on once again.
Crude Velocity was an emphatic winner that day, going past Englishman in the straight, who seemingly didn’t get home from the front.
The drop in trip is likely to reduce the gap between the two, but with Crude Velocity looking one of the best three-year-old colts in America, it is difficult to see anything other than him winning once again.
00:04 Saratoga - Chief Wallabee @ 4/1
We finish with the Belmont Stakes and the first and second front the Kentucky Derby both run. It can be argued they were slightly fortunate that day having been in the rear throughout, and ultimately benefitting from a significant pace collapse late in the race.
The one to be with this time is Chief Wallabee, who finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby. He was arguably the one to take out the race, having raced prominently enough and mounting a challenge in the straight, before being badly hampered. He then picked up well to finish where he did.
With a field half the size this time, there is a much reduced chance of trouble in running, and Chief Wallabee can go on to win the final leg of the Triple Crown.
