With Haydock unable to race, the Lancashire Oaks card is being run at Newmarket on Saturday and Phill Anderson of the Racing Post supplies us with his best bets on the card.
13:30 Newmarket - Percy’s Star @ 11/4
15:50 Newmarket - Dashing Dick @ 13/2
16:25 Newmarket - Royal Zabeel @ 6/1
13:30 Newmarket - Percy’s Star @ 11/4
There was plenty of promise in maiden company from Percy’s Star earlier this year and he confirmed that promise when bolting up on his recent handicap debut at Leicester.
He looked like he was all speed that day, relishing the drop back to the minimum trip and first-time cheekpieces (retained here) were possibly the key to unlocking this sprinter’s potential.
There were also signs he was still learning on the job at Leicester, looking green midway through the contest but the penny seemed to really drop in the closing stages as he cleared away from his rivals.
Newmarket’s July course is a speed favouring track, so it could be a big positive to be positioned on the front end and there’s no better man on these sorts than Silvestre De Sousa who is an excellent judge of pace from the front.
Percy’s Star is up in the weights for his Leicester success but he’s entirely unexposed and if he takes to Newmarket, he could be the one to beat.
15:50 Newmarket - Dashing Dick @ 13/2
Later on the card, Dashing Dick looks like a fascinating contender after signs of a return to form at this venue last time out.
That was easily his best effort of the campaign and there’s every chance he’s going to relish a drop back to this trip given that he’s a dual course and distance winner who has also won over 6f on the Rowley Mile course.
He’s been left on the same handicap mark for his latest effort and he’s dangerously well treated from 1lb below his last winning mark. With a high draw a potential advantage in this particular contest (pace drawn high), he looks a little overpriced with a fair amount of course form in the book.
16:25 Newmarket - Royal Zabeel @ 6/1
Another horse with form on the July course is Royal Zabeel who was successful on his only previous visit to the July course over C&D.
He had next to no chance from a low draw at Royal Ascot a couple of weeks ago but he had previously been shaping like his turn was near after promising efforts in both the Victoria Cup at Ascot and a competitive little contest that is working out nicely at Musselburgh a start earlier.
Like the previous selection, he’s lurking on a dangerous mark now just 1lb above his last winning handicap mark and the yard are really starting to hit form again after a quiet period earlier in the summer.
He looks like an each-way play provided that eight of the ten runners stand their ground.

Phill Anderson hit the frame with two each-way picks from three selections at Royal Ascot (Great Acclaim 16-1 and Outback Heat 9-1) and also returned a profit with a 33-1 second in his latest column for bet365.
